Service Learning & Travel Opportunities

Upper School students visited the classes, read books, worked on math problems, and built LEGO structures with the students.

Upper School students worked in the CRT kitchen, preparing nutritious meals. They helped organize the freezers for easy access to the most used ingredients.

Eco-Design and Construction students worked with the Hope 4 Life food pantry, which is part of Foodshare, staff to design and construct a van tailored to the food pantry’s needs in food pickup and delivery. The van included sustainable design elements and features that allow the pantry to best serve its clients. Students worked with the pantry staff to understand their needs and wishes, incorporating those features into the van design, as part of a collaborative process. At the end of the class, the class donated the van to Hope 4 Life for its ongoing use in battling hunger.

Students visited a habitat site and built children’s playhouses, which will be delivered to a new homeowner.

Other students visited their warehouse, which stores doors, lighting fixtures, windows, and home goods. They removed the items from the trucks and organized them in Habitat’s facility. These gently used items will be placed in a future Habitat home.

Students collected snacks and food supplies for Hands On Hartford’s Backpack Nutrition Program. The program provides Hartford students with weekend meals, snacks, and additional essentials to ensure they are nourished and ready to learn.

Howard Preserve is part of the Traprock Conservancy. Students in Biology (all Form 4 students) visited Howard Preserve to remove invasive knotweed and count invertebrates in Salmon Brook as part of a river health assessment. Their data contributes to the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection reports on water quality in the state.

Students delivered furniture and other household items from the Journey Home storage facility to individuals’ homes.

Middle School students in the “Farm 101: Plant Lab” skills course visited the roof of Hartford Hospital to see the hydroponic garden created by LEVO International. Students learn how hydroponics work, getting hands-on experience with a farming method that delivers nutrients efficiently in water, leading to greater production in smaller space.

At the Levo city farm, our Upper School students helped harvest the plants, mulched planting beds, and repaired the wooden frames.

Upper School students participated in sports with children who have physical or cognitive disabilities.

Our students worked in a reading buddy program, which paired a KO student with a child who is behind in their reading. It allowed students a chance to work with a mentor who models strong reading skills, provides an opportunity for students to practice their reading, and creates strong mentor-mentee relationships.
