2023-2024 Baseball – Boys Varsity

Athletics > Teams > Spring > Baseball > 2023-2024 Baseball – Boys Varsity

The baseball program shines on the diamond of the dedicated Varsity Baseball Field, located at the front of campus near the Estes Middle School. One of our most stalwart spring programs, in 2022 the baseball team qualified for the Founders League postseason tournament, the first year of the tournament’s existence. Each season the team travels to Florida for their spring training trip, where they play Varsity and JV exhibition games, workout, and build team camaraderie with other program-building activities. The vast expertise of our coaching staff, who have played the game at the highest levels, brings individualized development to players that you can rarely find anywhere else.

Although Coach Steve Cannata retired after working at KO for 38 years, crimson and black run so deeply in his veins that he remains the Wyvern baseball coach, which is fantastic news for the baseball program. A pitcher for the UConn baseball team that played in the 1979 College World Series, Cannata brings years of experience and heart to his coaching role.

He approaches every player individually, knowing that what works for one player may not work for another. “You have to treat everyone as an individual,” he said. “There is not one way. Everyone is different and responds differently. Whether coaching or treating someone for an injury, each athlete has their way of dealing with things, so you just have to be aware and recognize that.” Kind, compassionate, quiet, and humble, Cannata builds relationships with his players and takes deep pride in their development as players and young men of character.

All Kingswood Oxford athletes have access to our 33-acre campus, with multiple playing fields, an artificial turf field, a multi-purpose fieldhouse, a yoga studio, and two fitness centers. Certified athletic trainers are on hand every day to ensure the health, well-being, and development of every student-athlete. Every team also reflects the school’s core values, demonstrating honesty, integrity, and respect, learning with passion, and caring beyond self.
